So now that another week has been wasted in the Nation's upper chamber, I've concluded that most Republican Senators are intent to go down with the ship a year from now. Their current strategy would appear to ensure a loss of at least 5 Seats in next year's election and it could get much worse if they refuse to change trajectory.
Having announced his intention to leave the Senate next year, it was my hope that Senator John Warner would finally feel freed to join with fellow VA Senator Jim Webb and come up with reasonable legislation beyond getting the troop numbers down to something significantly less than what was stationed in Iraq before the Surge.
This merger of capable minds didn't happen and Warner's vote against Webb's amendment this week ensured the amendment would not muster the 60 votes need to at least get to Bush. And so the war, completely financed on borrowed funds, drums on, endlessly.
Observing the current landscape, it would appear the Republicans will lose 3 Senate seats at a minimum, including Warner's, and it's not out of the realm of thought that up to 7 could flip. If the net result is anything in between, the needed 60 votes will be there, with a likely Democratic President, to finally wind down the travesty of Iraq.
This path is 14 more months beyond reason, but I see no recourse under the current circumstances other than the long one.
